As you read this, more and more people are waking up to realise and understand what a con the government's National ID scheme is turning into. Local branches are being created around the country and with YOUR HELP we can defeat proposals for ID cards and the loss of your liberty and freedom.

Every day I speak to more and more people who are concerned at the alarming rate the country appears to be slipping into a police state. Perhaps it's apathy, perhaps it's lack of information and understanding or perhaps it's the feeling that ordinary people are powerless to stop the changes the government are bulldozing in?

Having worked for over 20 years in the I.T. sector as a computer and network consultant, with a specific interest in security and privacy, I'm more than aware of the shortcomings, problems and lack of planning that has gone into ID cards and the National Identity Register. To this aim, I have pledged to help No2ID in the local region, to raise public awareness of the important issues, and to help gain momentum in the growing tide of public opposition to ID cards and the 'Big Brother' database state. Hence the start of the Portsmouth group.

- Paul Vigay, Portsmouth local coordinator

Portsmouth is the location of one of the 69 regional interrogation centres, and you can view the original planning application details here.

Britons' ID cards 'to be delayed'
Plans for a wider rollout of identity cards to British nationals appear to have been delayed for three years.
ID cards will be introduced for foreign nationals this year and "Phase II" of the scheme to introduce them for UK citizens was due to start in 2009.
But documents leaked to the Tories suggest it has been put back to 2012.

55% of the UK population say scrap ID cards
Partly in response to the governments continued incompetence at managing private data, the number of people opposing national ID cards continues to grow, with now over half the population opposing them.

UK families put on fraud alert
Two computer discs holding the personal details of all families in the UK with a child under 16 have gone missing. This highlights the governments complacency at holding private information and managing national databases. The ID Card scheme should be halted immediately whilst an independent audit of all personal information held on government systems is carried out.

Why Oppose ID Cards

A little while ago I wrote a paper detailing ten reasons why ID cards will not stop terrorism, identify theft or fraud, but WILL remove your freedom and liberty. You can read it here.
